Siamese Fighting Fish, Thailand’s National Aquatic Animal.

Siamese Fighting fish or Betta fish are among the most popular and beautiful pet fish in the world. Its bright colors makes the fish popular in home and office aquariums, while the aggression make them unique characteristic, they will get into a fight with other fish who tries to enter their space.

The little fish is know by a different names “Pla Gud” in Thai which translates to Fighting Fish. Siam is the ancient name of Thailand, then becoming “Siamese Fighting Fish”, also known as “Betta Fish” in the West.

Most Thais when they were young, especially in rural areas. They caught the fish from canals and ponds for the gambling purpose then become breeding of the betta fish for gambling.

Through selective breeding, we continually see new and colorful betta fish. A wide range of colors and fin types have been developed, including: hmpk, veiltail, delta, halfmoon, crowntail, double tail and many more.

The cabinet on February 5th, 2019 approved the Siamese fighting fish to become Thailand’s national aquatic animal.
